The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) recently expanded its Task Flotilla Seven into a new operational command designated Task Fleet Command.
The new rapid response-capable command will operate under the ROK Fleet Command. Its duties will include protection of sea lines of communication, support for joint maritime security efforts conducted with partner nations, participation in multinational exercises, and maintaining readiness against possible North Korean aggression.
Task Fleet Command consists of three operational squadrons with each squadron including Sejong the Great-class Aegis-equipped guided-missile destroyers and Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class destroyers. A fourth squadron will provide logistical support for the other three and will include fast combat support ships.
The command is homeported at Jeju Naval Base and will also include six new locally-developed KDDX-class stealth destroyers once these enter operational service with the ROKN in the 2030s.
The Task Fleet Command's flagship is the recently commissioned ROKS Jeongjo the Great, the first unit of three destroyers under Batch II of the Sejong the Great-class.
