Dutch Navy commissions updated LCU landing craft

The first two of four renewed landing craft utility (LCU) vessels were handed over to the Dutch Navy yesterday following a modernisation program.

The vessels are expected to now last until at least 2032, with the remaining two following later in 2025 and in 2026.

The landing craft have been adapted to meet new requirements and changing uses, with improved sensors, weapon and command systems.

Ballistic protection has been applied, and the update includes modern sleeping quarters, sanitary facilities and maintenance facilities.

Generators have been renewed, and the wheelhouses have been modified with completely different layouts and renewed equipment. The exhausts have been moved to the stern of the vessels.

"With the LCUs, the armed forces therefore deploy troops and equipment quickly and effectively," said the Dutch Ministry of Defence in a statement. "This is especially important during a crisis and when no port is available."

De Haas Shipyards in Rotterdam carried out the midlife upgrades.
