India's Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has completed conducting contractor's sea trials of two new surface ships ordered by the Indian Navy.
The ships that underwent the trials are the future Nilgiri-class stealth frigate INS Himgiri and the anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC) INS Androth.
Representatives from the Indian Navy, GRSE, and classification societies were on board both ships during the trials to monitor their performance, as the trials are among the final processes that need to be undertaken prior to delivery to the customer.
The future Himigiri has a length of 149 metres, a beam of 17.8 metres, and a displacement of 6,670 tonnes. The frigate is propelled by two diesel and two gas turbine powerplants in a combined diesel and gas (CODAG) configuration and will be able to achieve sustained speeds in excess of 28 knots.
A total of seven Nilgiri-class frigates will be built. Three will be built by GRSE while the remaining four will be delivered by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
The future Androth will meanwhile be capable of performing mine countermeasures missions in addition to ASW missions. Armament will include torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, a 30mm naval gun, and two remotely controlled 12.7mm machine guns.
GRSE is manufacturing eight ASW SWCs in partnership with shipyard Larsen and Toubro.
