Peruvian shipbuilder SIMA has launched a new landing ship slated for the Peruvian Navy.

The future BAP Chimbote belongs to a class of two landing ships being built by SIMA for the Peruvian Navy. The future BAP Talara, the other vessel in the class, was also launched recently.

SIMA, with South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries providing technical support, is building the two landing ships in addition to a frigate and an offshore patrol vessel. The latter two vessels will also be handed over to the Peruvian Navy upon completion.

Chimbote and Talara are being constructed as multi-purpose vessels. Their duties will include personnel and cargo transport, emergency response, and disaster relief.

Upon completion, each landing ship will have a length of 58.9 metres, a beam of 13.2 metres, and a top speed of 10 knots. Each vessel will be able to carry up to 21 shipping containers in addition to vehicles and other cargo.

The vessels are also fitted with aft helicopter decks.
