The Florida State Government has awarded US$9 million in grant funding to the City of Pensacola for infrastructure improvements to expand Florida's shipbuilding capacity at the Port of Pensacola.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said these infrastructure enhancements will help the Port of Pensacola expand to produce complex navy ship modules for submarines and warships up to 400 feet (120 metres) long.
The governor's office said the award will support the growing need nationally to create additional capacity in the maritime industrial base.
The US$9 million has been earmarked for infrastructure enhancements to support construction of two shipbuilding facilities at the Port of Pensacola. It will cover phases including site development, utilities, and facility construction.
The governor's office said the project will encompass approximately 400,000 square feet (37,000 square metres) of manufacturing space and support the creation of approximately 2,000 manufacturing and related jobs.
The City of Pensacola had earlier secured a US$76 million grant from Triumph Gulf Coast to support this project.
