Indian frigate down in port collision

Alex Baird

The 16,202GT Cyprus-flagged vessel 'Nordlake' collided with and sunk the Indian Navy frigate 'Vindhyagiri' on Sunday.

The collision took place when the navy vessel was entering Mumbai. Two cargo vessels nearby, one of which was the 'Nordlake', were crossing each other's paths, and the 'Nordlake' collided with 'Vindhyagiri' as she took evasive action to avoid the other cargo vessel.

The navy vessel suffered seawater ingress as a result and a fire later broke out on board. All on board the navy vessel, mainly families of navy personnel, were evacuated.

'Nordlake' is reportedly detained in port. She is reported to have sailed from Jawaharlal Nehru Port shortly before the accident, destined for the UAE.
