An icebreaker suffered an onboard fire while undergoing repairs at a shipyard in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg on Saturday, September 5.
The Soviet-era icebreaker Admiral Makarov was at Kronstadt Marine Shipyard for a scheduled overhaul when a blaze ignited in her steering compartment at around 14:20 local time and eventually spread across an area of 80 square metres.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations dispatched ten firefighting appliances and over fifty personnel to the area to render assistance.
Local media said the fire was contained approximately two hours after it broke out and was finally extinguished after another two hours.
No serious injuries have been reported.
Admiral Makarov is owned by local port operator Rosmorport. The icebreaker was built in Helsinki in 1975.
The vessel has reportedly been in Saint Petersburg since February 2025 for her main engines to be overhauled. The process was initially scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
The icebreaker was primarily being operated in the Arctic and had been slated for relocation to the eastern portion of the Gulf of Finland following the overhaul.
