The UK Border Force (UKBF) and other partner agencies acting on intelligence reports have confiscated more than 2,000 blocks containing approximately 2.4 tonnes of cocaine during a raid at London Gateway Port in the middle of June.

UKBF said the narcotics were housed along with other cargo in a shipping container that arrived at London Gateway along with several other containers on an unidentified ship that had originated from Panama.

The container housing the drugs had been placed beside several boxes, prompting authorities to move these out of the way with the help of port employees to access the contraband.

Officials have estimated that the seized drugs have a street value of around £96 million (US$130 million) and were merely part of a broader smuggling operation involving a number of cartels based in South America.

The UK Home Office said the recent seizure is the sixth-largest to be made by the agency since it started keeping records.
