A luxury motor yacht suffered an onboard fire and later capsized and sank off northern Sardinia in Italy on the night (local time) of Tuesday, August 11.
The Malta-registered Angiola was just off Sardinia's Costa Smeralda resort destination when a blaze ignited in her engine compartment earlier in the day on Tuesday.
Although the fire was contained, the ensuing damage resulted in water ingress, which then caused the vessel to lose buoyancy and list heavily to starboard.
As the yacht began to list, 12 of the occupants were transferred to another vessel that was also in the area while the owner and another individual remained aboard. These last two individuals were later rescued by the crew of a patrol boat that had been sent to the area to render assistance.
The yacht eventually capsized and sank to a depth of seven metres. No oil spills have been detected, though containment booms have been placed around the vessel as a precaution.
No injuries have been reported among the 14 passengers and crew.
The yacht's owner has since contracted a salvage company to remove the wreck from the area.
According to local reports, Angiola was delivered just four days prior to the incident, having only recently been purchased by her current owner.
The 30-metre yacht was originally completed in 2020 by Italian builder Permare.
