Tug sinks following collision with containership at Spain's Barcelona Port

A tug with three people on board sank following a collision with a container vessel at the Port of Barcelona in Spain on Monday, June 30.

The tug Cala Gullo was assisting the Malta-flagged, 330-metre containership Cape Sounio as it was performing a turnaround manoeuvre prior to departing Barcelona's Hutchison Ports Best terminal at around 11:00 local time on Monday.

The containership's bow then struck the tug, which developed a severe list before ultimately sinking stern first.

The Port Authority of Barcelona immediately deployed emergency response teams and a pilot boat to render assistance. All three people who were on the tug were safely rescued by the pilot boat's crew.

No injuries have been reported among the rescued individuals and no pollution has been detected in the surrounding waters. Cape Sounio has since resumed her scheduled voyage to Valencia with an estimated arrival of Wednesday, July 2.

The Port Authority of Barcelona has begun an investigation into the mishap while work is ongoing to refloat the sunken tug.
