Three people are confirmed dead while 14 others have been reported as missing after four tour boats capsized in Guizhou province in southwestern China on Sunday, May 4.
The incident occurred in the late afternoon (local time) of Sunday as the boats were conducting separate sightseeing tours on the Liuchong River in Qianxi City.
One of the rescued passengers told local media that the conditions on the river were still normal shortly after the boats set sail but that a sudden squall with rain and strong winds later formed in the area, resulting in poor visibility.
The four boats capsized shortly afterwards, and more than 70 people ended up in the water.
Search and rescue (SAR) personnel as well as some Good Samaritans arrived in the area in response to the capsizings and pulled 60 survivors and the bodies of three deceased victims out of the river.
Divers, support vessels, and remotely operated vehicles have also been deployed to the area as part of the ongoing SAR effort in an attempt to locate the 14 people who are still missing.
