Three dead after boat capsizes off Malaysia's Perhentian Islands

Three people were killed after the boat they were riding in capsized in bad weather just off Malaysia's Perhentian Islands on Saturday, June 28.

The unnamed vessel had 15 passengers on board and was travelling between the islands of Kecil and Besar when it encountered rough seas and heavy rains at around 22:30 local time on Saturday.

The deceased passengers included a 40-year-old male, his three-year-old daughter, and a 10-year-old girl.

The rescued survivors included a six-year-old child who is reportedly in critical condition and has been brought to hospital in Besut.

A local police official said a preliminary investigation revealed that the passengers were not provided with lifejackets at any time before the boat capsized.

The vessel's captain meanwhile tested positive for drug use and was also discovered to have prior drug-related offences. He has since been taken into police custody for further questioning.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has begun an investigation to determine if the boat and the captain had the proper licences and if regulatory requirements had been satisfied.
