Six people were killed while a seventh is unaccounted for after a tour boat capsized in the Pacific Ocean off Chile's southern coast on Sunday, January 26.

The incident occurred when the unidentified vessel struck a rocky area and subsequently capsized off the town of San Juan de la Costa in Osorno Province.

The country's disaster prevention and response service initially reported 27 survivors, four fatalities, and three missing individuals. The incident's death toll was raised to six on Monday, January 27, after officials confirmed that two of the missing individuals have been found but were already deceased.

An initial investigation showed that one of the vessel's engines had malfunctioned, causing it to crash into some nearby rocks.

A prosecutor told local media that the boat's owner has been arrested and charged with homicide in connection with the incident.

An official of the Osorno provincial government said that the vessel was carrying passengers beyond its maximum capacity and that it lacked the necessary safety features.
