Sightseeing vessel loses steering control, strikes quay in central Stockholm

A sightseeing vessel reportedly suffered a loss of rudder control that then caused it to strike a quay in central Stockholm in Sweden on Saturday, July 12.

The brunch cruise vessel Stockholm was returning to her jetty with 204 embarked passengers when she struck the Kastellholmen quay on the afternoon (local time) of Saturday.

No injuries have been reported.

One of the passengers told local news outlet SVT that they were instructed by the crew to brace themselves just seconds before the crash occurred.

A representative of the company that owns the ferry said that a "technical fault" had rendered the rudder inoperative but that the crew were still able to manoeuvre the vessel towards her assigned jetty.

The Swedish Coast Guard, the Swedish Transport Authority, and local police have begun an investigation into the mishap, which is also the second quay strike by a passenger vessel to occur in Stockholm's waters in less than a week.

On Wednesday, July 9, a boat carrying 150 people accidentally rammed a quay in Nacka. Five people who were on board suffered minor injuries and were later brought to hospital.
