The Daily Mail reports that all 92 passengers and crew on a tour boat in the Caribbean Sea off the city of Santa Marta in northern Colombia were forced to abandon ship after their vessel caught fire on Monday, March 3.
An initial investigation revealed that the blaze on the tour boat Katamaran Tayrona I ignited after one of its engines suffered an electrical short.
The flames then spread quickly through the vessel, and the 89 passengers and three crewmembers jumped into the water to escape injury.
Personnel from various local agencies subsequently arrived on-scene and evacuated all 92 of the tour boat's occupants to shore. No serious injuries have been reported.
Taximarino, operator of Katamaran Tayrona I, has since issued a statement saying that the engines fitted on the vessel were rebuilt approximately two months prior to incident.
Monday's incident comes just one day after another Colombian tour boat capsized and sank off Cartagena more than 200 kilometres away. All 42 people who were on this other vessel were also safely rescued.
