The federal government of Pakistan will send a special committee of investigators to Morocco to determine the probable causes of a boat accident that killed at least 50 people off the coast of the latter country earlier this month.
The unnamed boat was transporting illegal migrants from Mauritania to Spain's Canary Islands when it capsized off the disputed Western Sahara territory on January 2.
Of the 86 people who were reportedly on board, 50 perished as a result of the capsizing. All but six of the deceased victims were Pakistanis.
Only 36 of the boat's occupants were rescued though these individuals' nationalities have not been disclosed.
The investigators assigned to conduct the probe in Morocco include officials from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Investigation Agency, and the Intelligence Bureau. Among other things, the team will collect evidence and meet with some of the survivors to identify the events that led to the capsizing.
