One person has died and two others were rescued in critical condition after a vessel struck rocks and ran aground near the Golden Gate Bridge on September 17.
Crews from the US Coast Guard and the San Francisco Police Department jointly carried out the rescue operation.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco had received a VHF radio report at 06:08 from a commercial fishing vessel alerting them to the grounded boat between Needle Rock and Lime Point Lighthouse.
Following the alert near the north end of the bridge, a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate recovered two people, whilst municipal police personnel rescued the third.
All three individuals were in critical condition during the rescue before being transferred to awaiting emergency medical services at Coast Guard Station Golden Gate for transport to Marin Health Medical Center.
The San Francisco Police Department subsequently confirmed that one of the individuals died at the hospital.
Salvage operations at the incident site are being led by the National Park Service, supported by coast guard response personnel assessing debris removal and potential pollution risks.
Officers from the San Francisco Police Department are currently leading the investigation into the cause of the grounding.
