Hong Kong-Macau ferry sailings temporarily suspended following pier strike

Gareth Havelock

Ferry sailings between Hong Kong and Macau have been temporarily suspended after a catamaran vessel with 300 embarked passengers accidentally struck a pier at Hong Kong's Sheung Wan terminal on Saturday, May 17.

The incident occurred as a high-speed ferry operated by local transport company TurboJet suffered a "mechanical failure," which then caused it to hit the pier at the Sheung Wan terminal at around 15:30 local time on Saturday.

The ferry had just departed the terminal and was en route to Taipa in Macau at the time of the incident. No injuries have been reported, though the ferry has been taken out of service and is awaiting inspection by local authorities as a prerequisite for repairs.

In a social media post, TurboJet assured passengers that it is working to expedite the vessel's repairs and that arrangements are being made to ensure substitute ferries will be available to mitigate any service disruptions.
