Baird Maritime

Four people are confirmed dead while another three have gone missing after a speedboat being used to ferry passengers capsized and sank in the waters off the Indonesian province of North Kalimantan on Monday, February 10.

Search and rescue (SAR) officials said the incident occurred at around noon (local time) on Monday when the speedboat Iksa Express was struck by debris and large waves, causing it to overturn and sink just off Bulungan Regency in North Kalimantan.

SAR teams that were despatched to the area following the capsizing pulled 44 survivors and the bodies of four deceased victims out of the surrounding waters. However, the remaining three people who were also on the speedboat at the time of the incident remain unaccounted for.

The SAR effort, which also involved the Indonesian military, local police and volunteers, was still ongoing as of Tuesday, February 11.

An investigation has meanwhile been launched to determine whether the boat was carrying passengers in excess of its authorised maximum capacity.
