Dutch emergency response officials have reported the successful completion of the firefighting effort on the Marshall Islands-flagged cargo vessel Trade at the Port of Amsterdam.
The blaze on the ship was finally extinguished by 20:45 local time on Friday, May 16, a little over 24 hours since it ignited.
Residents in nearby villages have also been advised that they may now open their windows and doors following an earlier warning to keep these closed due to the thick smoke and soot that had spread out from the port.
The fire on Trade erupted at around 17:00 local time on Thursday, May 15, as the ship was moored in the western portion of the Port of Amsterdam at the facilities of a local iron recycling and export company.
A fire official said the blaze originated in an area of the ship's hold where scrap metal had been loaded. Some of the scrap metal was successfully offloaded using the ship's crane even as the flames continued to spread to the other compartments.
There have been no reports of injuries resulting from the incident.
The firefighting operation had required the intervention of two response boats and numerous fire engines. A police helicopter equipped with cameras provided assistance by identifying critical areas of the ship where the firefighters needed to concentrate their efforts.
