A fire aboard the cruise ship Amadea prompted the evacuation of 320 passengers at Rønne port, Denmark, on Monday, September 14. No injuries were reported.
Bornholm Police received the alarm at 07:21 after a fire started in a linen-storage compartment while the ship was alongside the port’s cruise quay. The fire was extinguished by 07:31.
Police and fire/rescue agencies responded to the vessel, which was berthed at the outer section of the cruise quay. All evacuated passengers were reported to be in good condition.
Emil Gørløv, incident commander with Bornholm Fire Service, said the danger had passed after the fire was brought under control. He credited the crew with evacuating passengers promptly and helping emergency personnel move through the ship.
“They did a fantastic job evacuating the ship, and they gave us good guidance so we could quickly find our way around on board,” Gørløv said after the response.
Rønne Port employees positioned along the access road directed emergency vehicles towards the ship. Bornholm Police were investigating how the fire began in the linen compartment.
The Bahamas-flagged Amadea is operated by German cruise company Phoenix Reisen. The vessel is nearly 193 metres long, has a gross tonnage of 29,000 and can accommodate about 600 passengers.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built the ship at Nagasaki in 1991. It entered service as Asuka for Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha before being sold and placed in service with Phoenix Reisen in 2006.
Amadea had arrived in Rønne after calling at Gdansk during a Baltic itinerary. The ship was scheduled to continue to Wismar in Germany before returning to Bremerhaven.
Rønne’s expanded cruise quay allows larger vessels to berth directly rather than transfer passengers ashore by tender. The Bornholm port generally receives about 50 to 60 cruise calls each year.
