Officials in China report that the number of people who perished after four tour boats capsized in a river in the southwestern province of Guizhou earlier this week has increased to 10.
At least 70 others suffered injuries following the incident, which occurred when a sudden rain squall swept through the portion of the Liuchong River near Guizhou's Qianxi City at around 16:40 local time on Sunday, May 4.
The four boats had overturned, and more than 80 passengers ended up in the water.
The initial search and rescue (SAR) effort led to the recovery of three bodies and 60 survivors. Seven additional bodies and 23 more survivors were pulled out of the river as the SAR operation continued through noon on Monday, May 5.
The 70 injured survivors were later brought to hospital in Qianxi. None of these people's injuries are considered to be life-threatening.
Support vessels, remotely operated vehicles, and nearly 500 personnel including divers were deployed as part of the SAR effort.
President Xi Jinping has since ordered that the government take the necessary steps to ensure that maritime accidents are successfully prevented.
