At least 14 people suffered injuries following an explosion and a subsequent fire on board an offshore platform in the Campos Basin 130 kilometres off Brazil's Southeast Region on Monday, April 21.
The incident on the Petrobras-operated Cherne 1 platform occurred at around 07:25 local time on Monday. The gas flow through the platform was halted and communications were disrupted.
One of the platform's workers fell overboard following the incident but was safely rescued. All injured personnel were later brought to hospital in Rio de Janeiro state.
Firefighting vessels worked to contain the blaze and successfully extinguished it nearly four hours after it ignited.
Petrobras said that Cherne 1 has not produced oil since 2020 and is due to be transferred to Perenco before the end of thus year.
Petrobras said that it has launched an investigation into the incident and that it will review existing safety protocols before it will allow operations on the platform to resume.
