Good Samaritans rescue adrift fisherman off Philippines' Mindoro Island

Baird Maritime

The crew of a foreign commercial vessel have successfully rescued a fisherman who had become stranded and gone adrift off Mindoro Island in the Philippines' Southwestern Tagalog region earlier this week.

The 35-year-old male had gone adrift off Mindoro after his small boat suffered engine failure and became separated from a larger fishing vessel at around 04:00 local time on Monday, February 17.

The boat continued to drift until it was sighted by the crew of the passing Norwegian-flagged chemical tanker Sunny Victory west of Mindoro's Calavite Point later in the day on Monday.

The tanker was en route to Sandakan, Malaysia, at the time of the sighting.

Sunny Victory's crew then brought the fisherman on board their vessel and notified the Philippine Coast Guard about the rescue. The coast guard subsequently despatched a vessel to rendezvous with the tanker and bring the fisherman to shore.

The rescued fisherman suffered no injuries and has since been reunited with the crew on the larger fishing vessel.
