Itelyum Sea FVG launched the hybrid waste-collection vessel Eco Trieste in Muggia, Italy, on September 29 ahead of its planned entry into service at the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone.
The 24-metre workboat will collect ship-generated waste in both ports and their roadsteads under a concession from the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Orientale. Itelyum expects service to start shortly.
Eco Trieste can carry 60 tonnes of waste in four segregated compartments, with a total storage volume of 120 cubic metres. The capacity is intended to allow a port-wide collection round without an intermediate trip ashore to unload.
Weighing cells record each collection and send the data ashore in real time through dedicated software.
Electric propulsion is used for manoeuvres and navigation within port basins, without direct exhaust emissions in that mode. Electric operation is also intended to reduce noise.
Two thermal engines fuelled by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) provide the other propulsion source.
