Sulpicio Lines VP’s plea rejected

Filipino ferry line operator Sulpicio Lines' vice-president Edgar Go will soon face charges over a 2008 ferry sinking that left 700 plus people dead or missing. Phillipines' Justice Secretary Alberto Agra who has denied an appeal for the reversal of the resolution that upheld the filing of criminal charges against the shipping executive in connection with the sinking of M/V 'Princess of the Stars' on June 22, 2008.

Agra, in his March 22, 2010 resolution, rejected Go's petition for the withdrawal of the criminal complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, serious physical injuries and damage to property filed against him before the Manila City Regional Trial Court.

Agra stressed that there is sufficient proof to hold the Sulpicio Lines and its missing captain Florencio Marimon Sr. were liable for negligence which resulted in the tragedy.

The panel of prosecutors held that Marimon, as a master of the vessel, demonstrated his negligence by his lack of foresight and precaution in observing the rules of good seamanship when he departed from the Port of Manila despite the onset of typhoon Frank (Fensheng).
