Denmark's Hvide Sande Shipyard has commenced sea trials of Helgøy, an all-electric double-ended ferry built for Norwegian operator Torghatten Nord.

The 50-metre ferry was ordered by Torghatten in June 2024 and will operate in the Tromsø region of northern Norway. The routes identified at the order stage were Bellvik–Vengsøy and Musvær–Mjølvik–Risøy, northwest of Kvaløy.

Delivery of the ferry had originally been planned for March 31, 2026.

Helgøy is fitted with a 4MWh battery installation and two Schottel SRE 270 LFP azimuthing thrusters, each driven by a 750kW permanent magnet electric motor. Auxiliary power comes from two Scania DI16 091M gensets.

The steel and aluminium ferry has an LOA of 49.9 metres, a beam of 13.9 metres, and a depth of four metres. She can carry 30 cars and 149 passengers and crew and is classed by DNV.

The Norwegian Ship Design Company provided basic and detail design for the ferry. The hull was built at Montex in Gdansk, Poland, before being transferred to Hvide Sande Shipyard for outfitting.
