DFDS reports decline in June freight and passenger volumes

Alan Bosworth

Danish ferry operator DFDS reported that its total freight volumes in June 2025 were down 3.7 per cent compared to the same month last year, adjusted for route changes. Total passenger numbers for the month fell by 7.1 per cent to 414,000, also adjusted for route changes.

The company transported a total of 3.4 million lane metres of freight in June. The decline in volume was driven by lower activity in the North Sea, which was impacted by a national strike in Sweden affecting Gothenburg port operations. Mediterranean volumes were also below 2024 levels following capacity reductions due to new competition, while Channel volumes were down partly due to a decrease in the total Dover Strait market.

The monthly decrease in passenger numbers was primarily driven by lower volumes on the Channel routes. The number of cars carried in June was down 9.3 per cent, adjusted for route changes.

For the year-to-date, adjusted freight volumes were down 1.3 per cent, and passenger numbers were down 4.4 per cent. Over the last twelve months, the total number of passengers increased by 10.4 per cent to 6.1 million.
