Hydrofoil tour boat enters operational service in New Zealand's Auckland Harbour

Baird Maritime

A new electric hydrofoil catamaran vessel developed by New Zealand-based marine technology company Vessev has entered service and will begin regular operational sailings in Auckland Harbour before the end of the month.

Local tour boat and ferry company the Fullers Group, trading under the name Fullers360, is the operator of the 8.95-metre hydrofoil-equipped vessel, which has since been named Kermadec.

The vessel's all-electric propulsion will deliver a top speed of 30 knots and a range of 50 nautical miles at a service speed of 25 knots. Power is supplied by batteries equipped with fire protection systems and other safety features.

Because of the use of hydrofoils, the vessel’s hull can remain 50 cm above the surface of the water while underway, thus allowing the vessel itself to attain high transit speeds without being affected by waves even in bad weather. This then ensures a much more comfortable ride and little to no fatigue on the occupants.

Kermadec will be used primarily as a tour boat and as a point to point transport. Passengers can opt for a private charter or a 40-minute journey.

The latter will start at Auckland’s Viaduct, where guests will experience foiling above the water while enjoying panoramic views of Auckland's skyline, the Harbour Bridge, and the waters of the Hauraki Gulf.
