Viking Line, TT-Line to launch Finland-Estonia freight service in 2027

Viking Line plans to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the route’s vessel, which is expected to offer around 2,000 freight lane metres.

Viking Line and TT-Line have agreed to jointly operate a freight ferry service between Vuosaari in Helsinki, Finland, and Muuga, Estonia, with operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

Viking Line announced the agreement on October 5. The company will acquire a 50 per cent stake in the vessel deployed on the route and expects to invest about €10 million.

The companies will run the service through a joint operation agreement, with no separate company being formed. Viking Line said the investment was not expected to have a material effect on its financial position.

The service will compete with Eckerö Line, whose Finbo Cargo already serves the Vuosaari–Muuga route. The regular ferry connection between the ports began in 2017.

In a separate announcement on the planned service, the Port of Tallinn said it had signed an agreement with TT-Line to operate a Ro-Pax ferry on the route, with around 2,000 freight lane metres.

The vessel will also have a restaurant or café, a passenger lounge and cabins.

The port expects the vessel to be named in November 2026, with the precise service start date still to be confirmed.

Rene Pärt, a member of the Port of Tallinn’s management board, said: “Freight volumes on the Muuga–Vuosaari route have grown steadily over the years and are now approaching the limits of what can be handled with a single vessel. This clearly demonstrates market demand for additional capacity and more frequent departures.”
