Ecuador trawlers studying impact of trawling fishing ban from December

The crew of vessels engaged in trawling fishing in Ecuador are studying the impact of the banning of trawling fishing by the government from December this year.

The government's new policy was to "protect marine ecosystems and help prevent climate change as a result of harmful modality by the trawlers."

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, William Moran, said that focus was on eliminating trawling fishing as a practise, not the fleet itself.

According to the deputy minister, trawlers should switch to other kind of fishing such as eel fishing and tuna fishing, among others.

The other option offered by the plan is to modify the boat to do pelagic fishery or giant squid, but this requires changing the bearing of the vessel.

Those considering transforming the ship can obtain loan from the National Financial Corporation to acquire another boat with the right features.
