Switzerland-based Viking River Cruises took delivery of a new river cruise ship from German shipbuilder Neptun Werft on Tuesday, March 18.

Named after a deity in Scandinavian mythology, Viking Nerthus is equipped with a hybrid system consisting of a diesel-electric drive and a battery pack. Nepturn Werft said this will absorb peak loads and save fuel, in addition to generating significantly reduced vibrations.

The ship is also equipped with a number of technical innovations, such as a compact system for wastewater treatment.

Viking Nerthus has an LOA of 125 metres, a beam of 17 metres, and space for 168 guests and 46 crewmembers. The guest cabin options include 84 outside single staterooms and suites, some of which have their own balconies.

The other facilities include a sun deck with 360-degree views, lounges, a bar, a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows, a library, and a retail shop.

Viking Nerthus' initial sailings will be in France with stops within Paris and the Normandy region.
