Finnish builder completes work on low-emission cruise ship concept

Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku has completed work on a new cruise ship concept promising significantly low local emissions.

Meyer Turku said the project achieved its set emissions reduction target as indicated by the vessel’s lifecycle carbon being successfully reduced by more than 90 per cent compared to the baseline defined by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Anu Ahola, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at Meyer Turku, said that the project, "has provided a solid foundation for development work," and that the company now has, "a substantial portfolio of new ideas, tools, and next-generation ship technologies."

The concept vessel incorporates technologies and solutions that Meyer Turku expects will be technologically viable and available by 2030.

"More experimental or early-stage technologies were deliberately excluded yet the project still exceeded the net zero requirements with a clear margin," the company said in a social media post on Thursday, February 12.

"No single solution is enough — for example, simply switching fuels will not achieve the desired impact," added Liina Vahala, Meyer Turku's Head of Product Development. "A net zero vessel concept is the sum of many complementary measures."

Meyer Turku will present the ship concept in more detail in April 2026.
