A F Theriault and Son delivers new trawler

Valentine Watkins

Canada-based boat builder A F Theriault and Son has recently delivered a new trawler, built for W M Schrader Fisheries of Larry's River, Nova Scotia.

The vessel measures 19 metres in length, with a beam of seven metres and a draught of three metres. The solid FRP hull was designed in-house, while advanced composites were used to build the wheelhouse, deck and bulkheads. "This type of construction requires less maintenance and produces, overall, a better quality boat," said A F Theriault in a statement.

Power is provided by a Mitsubishi S6R-Y1MPTA engine rated for 440kW and turning a four-blade manganese bronze propeller. On deck, A F Theriault manufactured and installed custom-built fishing equipment, including two hydraulic split winches, a two-metre diameter net drum on stern, an aluminum fish box on deck, as well as a galvanized A-frame. The main hydraulic pump for the hydraulic systems is to be driven by a 300kW Mitsubishi S6B3.

The wheelhouse is equipped with the latest electronic equipment to "ensure safe and successful fishing". The two bunk rooms in the forecastle are equipped with three bunks each. Lastly the wheelhouse, galley and bunk rooms have an interior finish in oak and the galley is situated on the main deck.
