‘West Atlas’ oil spill plugged at last

Baird Maritime

PTTEP Australasia, the owner of the 'West Atlas' rig which has been spilling oil into the Timor Sea for the past ten weeks, has managed to stem the flow of oil.

According to Thai-owned PTTEP Australasia, no more oil or gas is escaping from the leak, however, the company will continue to pump a mud/brine mixture into the damaged pipeline as a precautionary measure.

Australian Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson said that a commission of inquiry and a commissioner would soon be announced. Besides the federal inquiry, the National Offshore Petroleum Authority will also conduct a separate inquiry.

The rig caught fire on Sunday November 1, and PTTEP said that the fires on the rig were expected to burn themselves out.
