Purus christens new battery hybrid CSOV

Jens Karsten

UK-based Purus has formally named a recently delivered commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) built by Vard at its Romania and Norway facilities.

Purus Chinook was designed by Vard Design in compliance with DNV requirements, including the COMF C2 V1 class notation for climate, noise and vibration. This ensures optimal onboard temperature regulation, reduced noise and vibration throughout the vessel, directly supporting crew welfare and long-term performance.

The 87.7-metre CSOV boasts excellent seakeeping and fuel efficiency with a modern hull and optimised propulsion system. Battery hybrid propulsion will allow zero-emission operation for extended periods, though the vessel is also methanol-ready.

Vard subsidiary Seaonics supplied the electric controlled motion compensated crane, which keeps loads stable and close to the crane tip from deck to TP platform to ensure efficient and safe cargo handling.

Seaonics also provided a stepless walk-to-work system capable of seamless operation between 15 and 30 metres above sea level to further enhance the vessel’s operational capabilities for personnel and cargo transfer.

Purus Chinook is now preparing to commence a multi-year contract with Vestas, supporting offshore wind farm operations across multiple European sites, beginning with an initial deployment in the UK.
