Norwegian yard joins European collaboration to design hydrogen-powered SOV

Baird Maritime

Norwegian shipbuilder Vard has joined the European project NAVHYS, which aims to develop a new design of zero-emission, service operation vessel (SOV) that will be fuelled by liquid hydrogen.

The NAVHYS project is led by aerospace company the ArianeGroup. Together with 11 partner companies, the project will develop innovative solutions for a liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage and fuel system for installation on a seagoing vessel.

The system will be integrated in an SOV designed by Vard for UK operator the North Star Group and will obtain an approval in principle from Bureau Veritas.

NAVHYS' goal is to provide a concept for a below-deck LH2 storage and fuel system for an SOV to propose a fully decarbonised maintenance solution for wind energy providers.

NAVHYS is focused on providing a concept that will reduce the environmental footprint and improve the energy efficiency of a hydrogen fuel system.

The project is co-funded by the European Union.
