Havyard Ship Technology has delivered the PSV 'Polarsyssel' to Iceland-based marine services provider Fafnir Offshore.
Based on Havyard's 832 L WE design, the vessel will immediately commence a contract for the Governor of Svalbard.
The vessel will operate six months a year for the Governor of Svalbard for a period of six years, patrolling the waters around Svalbard, Bjørnøya and Hopen and carrying out oil spill protection duties, rescue assignments and environmental monitoring.
Measuring 88.5 metres x 17.6 metres and with a speed of 14.5 knots, the vessel was developed to maximise comfort, safety and economical operation in Arctic waters.
The vessel was further modified for its annual work for the Governor of Svalbard, including ICE 1 B ice-class, WINTERICED BASIC notation to avoid icing, a towing winch, and the addition of a removable heli-deck and helicopter fuelling facility.
The 3,700DWT vessel will operate as a standard PSV for the rest of the year when not under contract in Svalbard. For these operations, the heli-deck will be removed and the vessel will provide cargo supply duties via its 850m2 deck.
According to Havyard, Fafnir Offshore is the first Icelandic company to order such a vessel, with oil and gas exploration currently underway around the country.
