Petrobras announces fresh oil discovery in Buzios field

Brazilian state-run oil firm Petrobras has confirmed the presence of oil in a well at its offshore Buzios field, the firm said on Friday, without giving details on the size of the discovery.

Petrobras said in a statement the oil was found through its 9-BUZ-99D-RJS well, in the western region of Buzios, which is located off Rio de Janeiro's coast.

"This is a new accumulation in a zone lower than the main reservoir," Petrobras said, adding the discovery reaffirms the pre-salt potential of Buzios field, referring to a layer in the oil-rich formation off the Brazilian coast.

Buzios is the second largest field in Brazil by production, behind Tupi field, both in Santos Basin.

Tests carried out at a depth from 5,600 metres (3.48 miles) confirmed the presence of oil reservoirs, the company said, adding it will carry out further laboratory analyses.

Petrobras holds a near 90 per cent stake in the project, and operates the field with Chinese partners, CNOOC and CNPC.
