ExxonMobil Australia subsidiary Esso Australia has awarded Allseas a contract to remove up to 12 retired platforms with a combined weight of approximately 60,000 tonnes from the Gippsland Basin in the Bass Strait.
Allseas will deploy the heavy lift vessel Pioneering Spirit to serve the contract. The vessel’s single-lift technology will permit the removal of entire offshore structures – topsides and jackets – in one go, making it possible to execute the scope of the project within just a few months.
Allseas’ removal scope covers up to 12 topsides and up to 11 steel jackets. The company plans to use Pioneering Spirit to remove all structures covered by the scope within three to four months beginning in late 2027.
Once safely removed, the facilities will be transferred to barges or vessels for load-in to the Barry Beach Marine Terminal in Victoria for dismantling and recycling by a separate onshore contractor.
Work is already underway, with engineering and project management teams in Allseas’ Perth and Melbourne leading the effort. Specialist support will be provided from the company’s offices in Delft and Kuala Lumpur.
