Jan De Nul began the installation campaign of the monopile foundations for RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea earlier this week.
The heavy-lift vessel Les Alizés has installed the first of 72 monopiles for what Jan De Nul said is Denmark’s largest wind farm to date. When finished, the wind farm will provide enough renewable energy to power more than a million Danish households.
RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm will have a capacity of more than one GW. The 72 wind turbines will be installed near the west coast of Jutland, some 22 kilometres offshore.
The monopile foundations each measure up to 100 metres long and weigh up to 1,500 tonnes. Les Alizés picks up the foundations at Eemshaven, The Netherlands, before sailing to the installation site off the western coast of Jutland, near Thorsminde.
The final monopile installation is planned towards the end of 2025.
Les Alizés had earlier been selected for for the transport and installation of monopile foundations for the Inch Cape offshore wind farm in Scotland. The works are scheduled to commence later this year.
