Port of Barcelona awards contract for sea embankment construction

The management board of the Port of Barcelona has awarded a contract for construction of the embankment of the enclosures of the new Catalunya wharf to the joint venture Sacyr Construcción – José Antonio Romero Polo for an amount of approximately €72.4 million (US$75.2 million) excluding VAT.

The works will take 27 months to complete and will involve building a sea embankment, which will form the first enclosure for depositing materials from the dredging of the port docks, the navigation channel and other works in progress, such as the Adossat wharf or the new mooring points of the energy wharf.

The embankment will delimit an area of 44.7 hectares between the South and Prat wharves and will be up to 16 metres deep, allowing it to be filled with nearly 6.3 million cubic metres of materials. It will also make it possible to start work on the terraces of the future Catalunya wharf.

The works also include preparing a terrace for storing and managing the works material. This action will enable the recycling of materials and avoid unnecessary transport to other locations.

This is the first step in the pending works that will make it possible to reorganise port activity in the southern area, concentrating all container movement in this area of the port.
