Meta announced plans to develop Petal, a transoceanic subsea cable connecting the US and France across approximately 7,000 kilometres. The infrastructure is expected to enter service in 2029.
Petal will deploy multi-core fibre technology to deliver one petabit per second of capacity, whereas traditional systems carry data in terabits per second.
This volume represents the network capacity required for 75 per cent of the world's population to stream music at the same time, according to the firm.
While carrying twice as much data typically requires double the cables and physical materials, the company indicated that Petal transfers twice the data without a proportional increase in power or physical infrastructure.
To develop the cable, Meta is partnering with NEC and Sumitomo Electric Industries, with telecommunications company Orange supporting plans to land the system on the Atlantic coast of France.
The venture expands the firm's portfolio of more than 20 international subsea projects, which also includes Project Waterworth and spans hundreds of thousands of kilometres worldwide.
