Russian non-profit Glavgosexpertiza has approved a project to rebuild one of the existing berths at Pevek Seaport in the Chukotka autonomous region in Russia's Far East.
Glavgosexpertiza expects the modernisation of Pevek Seaport's berth number three will contribute to ensuring year-round transportation through the Northern Sea Route.
Upon completion of the project, the berth will have a total area of 5,500 square metres, resulting in a projected cargo turnover of 945,000 tons each year.
The project partners said the current condition of the existing berth will prevent it from being suitable for continued operation. The berth will therefore be decommissioned and a new one will be built at the same location within the port.
The partners expect that the reconstructed berth will be able to accommodate general-purpose dry cargo vessels that each displace 25,000 tons.
The works will also entail surveys and dredging to expand the water area. The latter would permit berthing by larger vessels.
