Rohde Nielsen completes 225,000 cubic metres of capital dredging at Poland's Port of Leba

The trailing suction hopper dredger Magni R deepened the entrance channel and approaches as part of a reconstruction intended to equip Łeba for offshore wind service vessels, with suitable sediment reused on the Baltic shoreline.

Rohde Nielsen has completed capital dredging for the renovation of the entrance channel to the Port of Łeba in northern Poland, the company announced on Thursday, October 29.

The TSHD Magni R removed approximately 225,000 cubic metres of sediment from the entrance channel, harbour approach and associated navigational areas to achieve the required design depths.

Suitable dredged material was reused for coastal protection and shoreline restoration along the Baltic coast.

The company said the dredging forms part of port modernisation works aimed at reducing wave penetration, mitigating recurring siltation and improving access conditions.

The Maritime Office in Gdynia signed the entrance reconstruction contract on May 26, 2025, appointing Korporacja Budowlana DORACO as general contractor under a design-and-build arrangement.

The scope includes a new island-type eastern breakwater of approximately 260 metres, a 91-metre extension of the western breakwater, a new western groyne, three sediment traps, a 40-metre-wide approach channel and a turning basin 160 metres in diameter.

The wider programme is intended to adapt Łeba to accommodate vessels supporting the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

According to the authority, reduced wave activity and sediment accumulation will allow the port to meet operators' requirements for stationing crew transfer vessels. The programme is funded largely through Poland's National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
