The Port of Barcelona has awarded a contract for the construction of the embankment of the new Catalunya wharf enclosures to a joint venture between Sacyr Construcción and José Antonio Romero Polofor for €72.3 million ($78.0 million).

The works are expected to take 27 months to complete and will involve building a sea embankment, which will form the first enclosure for depositing materials from the dredging of the port docks, the navigation channel and other works in progress, such as the Adossat wharf and the new mooring points of the Energy wharf.

The embankment will delimit an area of 44.7 hectares between the South and Prat wharves and will be up to 16 metres deep, allowing it to be filled with nearly 6.3 million square metres of material, making it possible to start work on the terraces of the future Catalunya wharf.

This is the first step in the pending works that will make it possible to reorganise port activity in the southern area, concentrating all container movement in this area of the port.
