The Jan De Nul Group has been selected to undertake dredging works at DP World's port construction project in Ndayane in Senegal.
As the Port of Dakar is nearing its maximum capacity, and the surrounding area is fully saturated. DP World is developing a new port in Ndayane, located 50 kilometres south of the capital Dakar.
Once completed, the new deepwater port will be able to accommodate two large container vessels simultaneously in addition to relieving congestion at the Port of Dakar.
Jan De Nul is responsible for dredging the five-kilometre access channel and creating an 89-hectare platform for maritime services and container storage. The dredging works will remove an estimated 10 million cubic metres of soil.
Jan De Nul has deployed the cutter suction dredger Willem Van Rubroeck to Senegal, as the company believes the dredger is suitable for dealing with the hard rock in the channel's seabed.
Jan De Nul has already started dredging the access channel. The company expects the works to take two and a half years to complete.
