Coastal protection upgrades underway in Bunbury, Australia

Alan Bosworth

The City of Bunbury, Australia, along with the Department of Transport, are completing upgrades to coastal protection infrastructure at Koombana Bay and Leschenault Inlet in Western Australia. The project is being done in stages, with a targeted completion by November 2025.

The works involve using rocks to rebuild groynes and walls to protect public reserves and nearby properties from erosion and to help stabilise the beaches, preventing siltation. According to the City of Bunbury, work on the Leschenault Inlet rock walls at Koombana North is nearing completion, and the contractor will now move to the area adjacent to Koolambidi Woola.

During the project, there will be truck movement and traffic management in the area, as well as temporary pathway and beach closures.

The project is jointly funded by the Commonwealth Government, Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront, and the City of Bunbury, which also acknowledged the support of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
