Wilhelmsen adapts to IMO’s new tank-cleaning rules

The IMO has changed the approval criteria for tank-cleaning chemicals, with no perfume or colouring agents now allowed in tank-cleaning chemicals that will be discharged to sea inside the shore limits as listed in the MARPOL 73/78 ANNEX II.

All tank-cleaning products approved by the MEPC prior to January 1, 2007 now have to be re-evaluated based on the criteria. All IMO approved products evaluated through MEPC before January 1 2007 ceased to be valid on August 1 this year when the new and revised regulation came into force.

"Wilhelmsen Ships Service understands that tank cleaning is a vital factor governing the success of ships' operations," said Wilhelmsen Ships Service in a statement.

"Ship owners and traders also recognize the importance of efficient tank cleaning products and procedures to improve ship management efficiency, reduce operational costs and promote safety at sea."

Wilhelmsen Ships Service with its Unitor Chemical tank cleaning product range has announced that it is in full compliance with paragraph 13.5.2 of Annex II of MARPOL 73/78 and all of its products are listed accordingly in MEPC 2 /Circ.15 annex 10.
