After the propellers of two reefer vessels of the same owner had been suffering severe cavitation damage, he chose a protective Ecospeed coating for both propellers.
The application was performed in August and will prevent cavitation and mechanical damage from occurring again in the future.
An Ecospeed inspector flew to Riga to follow the coating of the first propeller. After the required two layers of the coating were applied and the propeller was effectively provided with an impenetrable protective layer from then onwards, the inspector flew to Tallinn for the application of the second propeller.
In this case the cavitation pitting across the blades was filled with Ecospeed to regain a smooth surface. This was done without the need for preliminary or subsequent repairs and restored the efficiency of the propeller to its optimum level.
The coating's flexibility enables absorption of the forces that are produced by cavitation, preventing similar damage from reoccurring.
With the right planning, grit blasting and application of the two required layers can be performed in just one day, making the speed of application of Ecospeed a further advantage.
A variant, Ecospeed Strong, has been developed especially for the protection of areas that are most often subject to cavitation. It has the same advantages as the regular Ecospeed coating, but, due to its increased strength, it is even more resistant to cavitation. It is ideally used over smaller areas that need extra protection, whereas our standard Ecospeed coating is the best choice for the larger parts of the hull less prone to this kind of damage.
